Developmental Coordination Disorder

Do you or your child have poor motor skills, even when doing something as simple as brushing teeth? Does it seem like your they know what words to use but can’t get the right “mouth muscles” to cooperate when speaking? Do they tend to bump into things or people or have a weak hand grip when grabbing objects? Developmental Coordination Disorder, or DCD, is a disorder that affects motor skill development, strength, and coordination—and may be the reason behind their difficulties. It used to be known as Dyspraxia.

Many children show lags in development from time to time, but disorders such as DCD don’t come and go; they’re consistent. DCD is usually identified in school-age children, but early signs of the disorder can often be detected in pre-school children as well.

Visual problems are not the cause of DCD but many people with these conditions have problems with their vision. Dyspraxic people by their nature display poor coordination and similarly display poor eye coordination.

The sort of problems we can help include:

  • Letter or word reversal
  • Reduced comprehension
  • Missing out punctuation when reading
  • Poor spelling
  • Poor word recognition

We have a long history of getting positive results for children with DCD. We don’t always have the answers straight away, but we are willing to work with you and your child to find the best way to help them achieve their potential.
